The Market Photo Workshop and Gwanza Arts, will be holding a 3-tier photography Masterclass Programme in Johannesburg, South Africa and Harare, Zimbabwe. The Joburg-Photo-Harare Program will be implemented over a 2-year period from 2012 to 2013.
The Joburg-Photo-Harare Programme consists of 3 masterclass workshops in which selected photographers, from both South Africa and Zimbabwe, will participate. The workshop in Johannesburg is scheduled for 11 - 18 April 2012 and will be hosted by the Market Photo Workshop. The follow-up workshop, hosted by Gwanza Arts in Harare, is scheduled for 8 - 15 August 2012. Both workshops will be followed by a 3rd workshop to be hosted in March 2013 in Johannesburg.
The Masterclasses will be an advanced level conceptualisation and professional development engagement, aimed at established photographers. The Masterclasses looks to improve upon already existing skills and experience. It will also involves an online networking platform to maintain communication between photographers in the two countries that will continue subsequent to the Masterclass completion.
The Masterclass is open to photographers who are professional working photographers and are looking to grow their critical and conceptual photography practice. Thus the Masterclass workshops incorporate exploring the state of photography, in its social environment and the complexities of African photography as both a concept and mode. Participating photographers will, through the Masterclass acquire training and experience in post production, editing and curatorial skills. The Joburg-Photo-Harare Programme hopes to encourage photographers’ critical development through intensive discussions, critiques and viewing of participating photographers’ portfolios by reputable photographers for analytical feedback.
Photographers applying to participate in the Masterclass workshops will be required to present an in-progress body of work before the program starts. This work forms the basis of the discussions, critiques and portfolio readings. Participating photographers will be expected to develop the in-progress bodies of work further during the Masterclass workshop intervals.
