Progress report elements (based on FP4 experience) Registration is now open for the year-long Photojournalism and Documentary Photography Programme (PDP). Formulated with the support of Getty Images and the Open Society Foundation, the course is aimed at producing informed and curious African photojournalists and documentary photographers who also have high levels of technical competence.

Intermediate to advanced knowledge of photography is desirable for those wishing to enrol in the PDP, which combines theory and practice.

The course is thus best suited to:

  • photojournalists and documentary photographers who have a few years of experience in their fields and would like to hone their abilities,
  • candidates with recognised prior learning qualifications in photography,
  • graduates in media studies or related fields who have a strong desire to develop photojournalism and documentary photography skills, and
  • people with demonstrable photographic talent who are also passionate about photojournalism and documentary photography.
The upcoming PDP, scheduled to begin in January 2010, will take place over three terms and a graduation period. It encompasses training across a variety of sectors, inter alia digital techniques and business skills. Students will also intern with various media houses and work with partner organisations on projects that allow them to develop their photographic abilities still further. The 2010 FIFA World Cup will naturally be a focal point for students as they produce portfolios that include images of spot news, general news, sports and action, and coverage of environmental issues.

Bursaries are available for deserving students.
