"RISING UP Together"

An exhibition of photos from the 1980s taken by Gille de Vlieg during the Resistance campaigns. de Vlieg was a member of the Black Sash movement who became a photographer during that time and in 1984 was invited by Paul Weinberg to join Afrapix.

She became involved with documentary photography in rural and urban areas. Her images have been published in newspapers, magazines and books nationally and internationally.  From 'Vukhani Makhozikazi' (1985) and 'Beyond the Barricades' (1989) to 'Women by Women *50 Years of Women's Photography in South Africa'*. (2006). They also formed part of the Afrapix monthly packages sent to various European organisations to support their fight against Apartheid.

Her work has been part of collective exhibitions such as: People's Portraits (SA National Gallery (1985), Radda Barnen (Sweden 1989), Malibongwe (Netherlands 1990) and others.1986)

This exhibition is a survey of her work during the apartheid years and will be shown at the Durban Art Gallery juxtaposed against works in a variety of media  from the permanent collection showing the context of the turbulent times.
