Photography is a profession where an artist with a strong sense of graphic design and pictorial composition uses sophisticated optical, electrical and chemical methods to create visual pictures.

Dedication and an ability to "get on with it" are required to survive. However, hardworking photographers will find immense career satisfaction, and opportunities for travel and independence.

Training incorporates most camera formats and  image capturing devices, including electronic image capture, manipulation and output.

About the college

The National College of Photography division of  Vega, The Brand Communications School, a division of The Independent Institute of Education (Pty) Ltd, delivers a new breed of communicators whose expertise is to generate sustainable brand ideas that can build businesses.

Our Photography course is aimed at candidates who intend to make a career in photography, and has a strong professional orientation. All aspects of professional photography are covered both in practice and theory, with the greater part of the time spent on practical workshops and projects, either in our well equipped studio or on location.

The three year full-time course leads to the qualification of National Diploma in Photography, with the 4^th year taking the student to the Bachelor of Technology degree, which is recognised as being on the level of an Honours degree. We are also accredited to offer Masters and Doctorate degrees in Photography.

The subjects covered include Applied Photography, Theory of Photography, Visual Communication and Professional Practice. Within these subjects we also do intensive modules and workshops on web design, digital imaging, Photoshop, moving media, book design and page layout.

Uniting those who see the extraordinary in the ordinary, the Photo Imaging Education Association (PIEA) inspires its members to become better teachers at every level of education. PIEA is an international network of educators and students creating resources, solving problems, sharing ideas, and building stronger relationships with the photo industry.

Photographers work in the world of visual communication. Through the media of still images they communicate with individuals and masses. Their role is to convey ideas, concepts, and information by means of a photograph. This form of communication can be found in newspapers, magazines, pamphlets, billboards, books, posters and many other media. Work can be done for exhibitions, printing in publications, packaging and posters or for use in audiovisual presentations, multimedia productions and the Internet. Photographers are required to work with sophisticated equipment and to be familiar with the various photographic processes. Most photographic work presents a range of practical problems including lighting, composition, exposure, development and printing, as well as the opportunity to create various special effects. The photographer is also a business person, dealing with a variety of clients on a day to day basis, making a living through effective visual communication.
